WhatsApp has announced that it is retiring its Electron desktop app, and users will now need to switch to the native app for their operating system in order to continue using the messaging service on their computers.
The Electron app was first released in 2015 and was designed to be a cross-platform app that could run on both Windows and macOS. However, the app was not optimized for either operating system and could be resource-intensive, especially on low-end machines.
The native app, which was released in 2021, is optimized for each desktop OS and offers greater stability and performance. It also includes some features that were not available in the Electron app, and should include the ability to use WhatsApp Business tools soon.
The transition from the Electron app to the native app began in April 2023, and users were given a grace period of four weeks to switch over. As of June 2023, the Electron app has been retired and users who attempt to open it will be prompted to download the native app.
Overall, the retirement of the Electron app is a positive move for WhatsApp users. The native app is more stable, performs better, and offers more features. If you are still using the Electron app, I recommend that you switch to the native app as soon as possible
