The magical world of Harry Potter, created by JK Rowling, is one of the most beloved franchises in the world. And now, after much anticipation, a major video game adaptation of this wizarding world has finally arrived: Hogwarts Legacy.
The game, which is set in the 1800s, allows players to attend the famous school of Hogwarts, learn to cast spells, and explore the castle. However, the game’s arrival has been met with a fierce online debate, with some calling for a boycott due to Rowling’s public comments on issues about transgender people. Despite the controversy, the game is predicted by some to be the biggest-selling premium release of 2023.
Hogwarts Legacy Gameplay and Graphics:
Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world adventure title, where players can zoom around on a broomstick, fight giant spiders, and collect a variety of hats and scarves. The game features impressive attention to detail, and its character customization options are thorough, including representation of all ethnic backgrounds and the LGBTQ+ community.
The developers have created five preset options for the best graphics settings for Hogwarts Legacy on PS and Xbox:
- Performance Mode. This option is good if you’re playing on a small screen or your display doesn’t support high graphics settings. By choosing this option, you prioritize performance.
- Balanced Mode. It is what is called the golden mean. You will get excellent graphics and high performance.
- HFR (High Frame Rate) Performance. If you want the best possible performance and are willing to sacrifice visuals, this is what you need.
- Fidelity Mode. You will get an excellent picture on the screen sacrificing frame rate and performance.
- Fidelity with Raytracing. If you are looking for a realistic picture, this option is what you need. Ray tracing will make the image more three-dimensional and the surroundings close to reality.
The attention to detail in the game is impressive, and it offers a compelling simulation of life at Hogwarts. However, some players have criticized the repetitive nature of certain gameplay elements.
Reaction to the Game:
Review aggregator Metacritic has scored the PlayStation 5 version at 86%. While some reviewers have praised the game for its magical setting and memorable new characters, others have criticized its unspectacular game design and lackluster main story.
Critics have largely reacted positively to the game, with IGN’s Travis Northup scoring it 9 out of 10 and praising its “exciting and wonderful” open-world adventure. The Guardian’s games editor Keza MacDonald, on the other hand, wrote that the game “feels too familiar to others in the genre to really stand out” but concluded that its “magical moments and the setting rescue it from mediocrity”.
Controversy Surrounding JK Rowling: JK Rowling’s public comments on issues about transgender people have sparked a fierce online debate, with some calling for a boycott of the game. Trans activist Eva Echo feels it’s important for people to understand the strength of feeling in the LGBTQ+ community, stating that “by buying the game you’re sending a clear message that it’s taking priority over the lives of trans people.” Some gamers have refused to play the game, including Twitch streamer and YouTube creator Zannah.
Another writer on Wired rated the game 1/10 due to Rowling’s remarks stating “well, she’s had some opinions. About people like me. And whether or not we should exist. She’s even gone as far as to suggest that we’re inherently dangerous, a threat to real (ouch) women everywhere.”
“The story is rooted in anti-Semitic tropes. The gameplay feels dated. The graphics feel like they’re a couple of generations behind. All the characters are one-dimensional. It doesn’t stay true to the established lore. Every character feels like an off-brand version of the characters we know and love. There’s no sense of place. No magic, no heart. ”
Despite the controversy surrounding JK Rowling, Hogwarts Legacy is set to be a major hit in the gaming world. You will enjoy attending the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, exploring the castle and its grounds, learning spells, and interacting with familiar characters and creatures from the series.
