Telecommunications giant Safaricom has announced a change to its popular reverse call service. Effective immediately, customers will be charged a fee for using the service more than twice in a single day.
Previously, customers enjoyed unlimited free reverse calls. However, the telco has revised its terms and conditions to introduce a charge of Ksh. 0.5 per reverse call request after the first two free ones within a 24-hour period.
According to Safaricom, the move is aimed at curbing misuse of the service and helping the telco cut losses, as customers opt for reverse calls even when they have sufficient airtime.
However, just limiting the service to users who have no balance would have sufficed. For a company that in May reported Kshs. 139.9 billion in Group Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT), there is no excuse to make a feature introduced for the less fortunate charged.
Introduced in June 2019 as an enhancement to the “Please Call Me” service, reverse call allows customers to transfer the cost of a call to the recipient. To use the service, simply add a “#” before dialing the recipient’s number. For instance, to reverse call 0722000000, dial #0722000000.
It’s important to note that the reverse call service remains free for the first two requests within a day, and it is only applicable to calls made within the Safaricom network.
