Starring South Africa’s Pearl Thusi as Agent Sono, South African spy drama, Queen Sono, has been cancelled after just one season. The series was initially greenlit for a second season before Netflix rescinded their decision citing the COVID-19 global pandemic.

A representative from Netflix made the announcement while applauding the team behind the show and reiterating that the international streamer would continue to work with creatives from Africa in a bid to bring more original African stories to life.
“We are incredibly proud of the Diprente team for sharing their audacious vision and bringing it to life with Netlflix. A huge thank you to our fans across the world for the love shared for our first African Original series.”
“Netflix is also grateful to the amazing efforts shown by the cast and crew for their stellar efforts in creating this show for our members around the world. We’ll continue to work closely with South Africa’s creative industry to keep producing more compelling ‘Made-in-South Africa’ stories.”
The South African crime series made headlines when the first season released earlier in 2020 as it was the first full Netflix Original series from the continent.
The show follows the South African spy Queen Sono who finds herself in a nefarious web of business and politics as she seeks to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death.
Responding to the reports Pearl Thusi said: “It’s so incredible that we as a team got a lifetime opportunity to make history together as there will never be another ‘first’ African Netflix Original Series. I’m proud of the work we did, but everything happens for a reason. I am excited about what the future holds.”
The show featured Kenya’s screen legend Raymond Ofula who made an appearance in Episode 3: The Devil’s Toys. The ever charismatic Ofula played the former President of Tanzania – President Magoro, an ally of Mandela during the struggle for the liberation of Africa.
