Powershot V10 Review: Is it Worth the Shot?

The Canon Powershot V10 is a first-generation camera singularly designed for vlogging that was released in May this year, it rivals other vlogging cameras like Sony’s ZV-1F and your regular smartphone. The Powershot V10 has a refreshing portable design that is comfortable to use handheld, a kickstand so you never need a tripod and stellar stereo audio recording, However, is it good value for your money?

But first, this is just an ‘average consumer’ review devoid of all the jargon you would expect in a camera review.

Features and Limitations

The Powershot V10 is compact and pocketable, with a quirky design that includes a fold-out stand. It features a large 1-inch CMOS sensor capable of delivering 4K/30p and Full HD 60p video, plus the option to shoot 20MP stills captured in JPEG format. The camera is designed for stable, comfortable one-handed holding and operation during both vertical and horizontal shooting.

8 Things to Know About the PowerShot V10

The camera also comes with some cool software features like 14 included color filter effects and Smooth Skin mode.

The PowerShot V10 is equipped with two large stereo microphones designed for narration and a third audio noise-reduction microphone which are stellar. On top of the built-in wind filter, an optional windshield can be purchased as part of the advanced accessories kit, further improving sound quality in outdoor conditions.

The controls are what I’d imagine you find on most cameras nowadays, the V10 uses both physical buttons and a touchscreen, however, the record button is at the front right next to the lens so you can start and stop recording easily while vlogging.

One of the major drawbacks of the Powershot V10 is its lack of optical stabilization. This can result in shaky footage, especially when you’re supposed to be walking around with it. This is a significant downside for a camera that’s marketed for vlogging and content creation on the go. The camera does have Movie Digital IS mode which is ideal for handheld videography as it helps with avoiding camera shake, offering sharper, cleaner footage with more detail and clarity but that crops into your video and isn’t that better too.

Moreover, it uses the same 1-inch sensor from the Canon Powershot G7 X III from 2019. While this sensor produces excellent results, it’s not the fastest sensor, so autofocus isn’t on the same level as Canon’s newer EOS R series of cameras. Additionally, it has a fixed 18mm f/2.8 lens that can’t zoom, which might be a deal-breaker for some users.

The battery life on the V10 is also not very good, and the fact that unlike other cameras it is not interchangeable is a bummer.

Comparison with iPhone 12

When compared to an iPhone 12, which is currently my daily driver, the Powershot V10 puts up a fight. While there aren’t too many reasons to pick it over your smartphone, if you really want a dedicated vlogging camera the compact camera is the way to go. That is not to say an iPhone 12 can’t essentially do what the Powershot V10 does, it can and potentially even better.

Pricing and Value for Money

Digital Compact Cameras - PowerShot V10 - Canon Philippines

The Powershot V10 is priced at $429, which might seem affordable at first glance. However, considering its limitations and the fact that most smartphones can do just as well if not better, it might not be the best investment for your money.

In conclusion, while the Canon Powershot V10 brings some interesting features to the table and offers an alternative user experience to most other vlogging cameras, it falls short in terms of value for money. Its lack of optical stabilization and dated technology are significant drawbacks. Unless you’re looking for a very specific user experience that this camera offers, maybe unlike me you can tinkle with the manual mode and get amazing vlogging videos that I can’t on my phone, you might be better off sticking with your smartphone for your vlogging needs.
