OPPO Enco Air Review

The OPPO Enco Air are a pair of earbuds from the tech giant that attempts to replicate the Apple Airpods for way less.

Props to OPPO Kenya for sending me a pair of the OPPO Enco Air and making this review possible.

What’s in the Box

  • Earbuds (L/R)
  • Charging Case
  • USB-C Charging Cable

First Impressions & Build Quality

The earbuds come in a white (or black and blue) charging case that is on the lighter side, making it easier to carry around but losing that premium feel. On the front of the case is an LED battery indicator, at the top is the semi-translucent design with the earbuds peeping through. At the bottom is a USB-C charging port.

When you take the earbuds out, it’s obvious that the OPPO Enco Air are trying to emulate Apple AirPods, and this is positive, they completely do everything right.

Once paired with your device, the OPPO Enco Air lets you activate your earbuds before you even wear them on, connecting to your mobile device as soon as you open their case.

These Enco Air feel high quality but don’t go dropping them around. There are no silicone tips with these buds, nevertheless, the buds are lightweight and are the most comfortable earbuds I have won. They fit in the ears well and stay. I forgot I had them on a lot, which was a first for me. They also never fell out once.

The buds are IPX4 sweat- and water-resistance rated. Getting caught out when it rains or those drips of sweat while you work out will not spoil them, you just can’t get in the shower and listen to sad songs while you cry with them…

Controls

The OPPO Enco Air touch-sensitive controls are a tad above the Tribit Flybuds 3, tapping is intuitive and simple, double-tap your earbud to instantly skip to the next song or touch and hold to activate volume control, triple tap for your Google Assistant.

You can customize the controls, OPPO says you can download and install the HeyMelody app to customize the earbuds but that didn’t work for me. Using the Earbud Function in the inbuilt settings app did the job, I set double-tapping on the left to play the previous track, tripple tapping wakes my Google Assistant, and touching and holding the right bud increases my volume while the left decreases the volume.

OPPO Enco Air Performance & Battery Life

The Oppo Enco Air lasted about 3-4 hours in my ears, The case then offers up to 24 hours when combined. Pretty solid. With the type C charger, a 10-minute charge will also give you 8 hours of playback.

In terms of performance, the OPPO Enco Air comes with Bluetooth 5.2 support which means acceptable connection strength which never dropped on me.

Mic test

OPPO claims the Enco Air has a deep neural network-based (DNN) binaural audio algorithm that produces human voices just as they sound in person. Using two microphones on each bud, OPPO Enco Air claims to have DNN noise cancellation for calls and while gaming to efficiently pick up on vocals in any environment.

In day-to-day use, the OPPO Enco Air delivered crisp call quality.

In terms of sound quality, despite using a bigger 12mm titanium-composite dynamic driver than the small Tribit Flybuds 3 6mm drivers or the 7.2-mm sound unit on the Xiaomi Airdots 2, the Enco Air have average sound quality.

Prince Kaybee’s Beautiful girls and Umenitosha tracks with an incredibly expensive variety of instruments mix and it’s the vocals that will hit you rather than any depth or detail from the songs. The bass isn’t really there.

Verdict

The case feels cheap and the audio is just average, however, If you’re on a budget and want some earbuds that can stay in your ears for hours on end without making your ears sore and itchy, these are your best bet.

The Oppo Enco Air aren’t for audiophiles, they are best suited for users who stay on calls for hours on end, for users who don’t like loud music, users that want earbuds that look good and work!o
