In a recent announcement, the Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria stated that Kenyans will soon start paying a fee to access services across all Huduma Centers. This move is aimed at enabling the 52 Huduma Centers across the country to generate revenue.
Huduma Centers have been offering a wide range of government services under one roof. These include national identity cards, birth certificates, NHIF services, police abstracts, registration of business names and applications for business licenses, NSSF services, investor-related registrations, and many other services.
However, with the new policy in place, Kenyans will no longer be able to access these services for free. “You have been enjoying these services without paying, there is no more free lunch. You have to pay for it,” said Kuria.
The introduction of fees is not just about generating revenue. It’s also about supporting e-commerce in the country. According to Kuria, the Huduma Center will serve as the backbone for e-commerce.
The Huduma Kenya Programme is a Kenya Vision 2030 flagship project that was launched by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in November 2013. The project aimed at enhancing efficiency in public service delivery by setting up Huduma Centres across different parts of the country.
With this new development, it remains to be seen how the public will react and adapt to the changes. As always, we’ll keep you updated with any further developments on this story.
