Media Council of Kenya Opens Public Participation on AI Guidelines for Journalism

The Media Council of Kenya has launched a public participation process seeking feedback on new guidelines governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism.

The Council has developed four comprehensive documents through its technical committee to address the growing influence of technology in journalism:

  1. A framework for data governance in Kenyan media practice
  2. Guidelines for reporting on artificial intelligence
  3. Standards for implementing AI in media operations
  4. Protocols for social media and internet use in professional journalism

Speaking about the initiative, MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo emphasized the importance of public involvement in shaping these guidelines. “In today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, we need collective wisdom to create standards that work for everyone,” Omwoyo explained. “These guidelines aren’t just about regulation – they’re about ensuring our journalism remains trustworthy while embracing new technologies.”

The timing of these guidelines reflects the growing impact of AI and digital technologies on journalism. As newsrooms worldwide grapple with AI integration, social media influence, and data-driven reporting, Kenya wants to take proactive steps to establish clear ethical boundaries and professional standards.

Interested parties can access the draft guidelines on the Media Council of Kenya’s website. The Council welcomes submissions from the public, media practitioners, and stakeholders until January 26, 2025, via email at Guidelines@mediacouncil.or.ke.

“Our goal is simple,” Omwoyo stated. “We want to help journalists embrace innovation while maintaining the highest professional standards. These guidelines will help navigate the complexities of modern journalism while preserving its core values.”

The final guidelines will incorporate public feedback to ensure they reflect industry needs and maintain journalistic integrity in an increasingly digital media environment.
