Kenya Power has launched a pilot project to install smart poles in Nairobi. The smart poles will provide an alternative way to deploy the last mile data networks using wireless technologies, thus providing a solution to telecom service providers to improve data coverage and capacity, as well as address the challenge of signal dropouts.
The pilot project is currently being undertaken in partnership with Safaricom at six locations within Nairobi. Once the pilot phase is completed, Kenya Power will install smart poles within its overhead network, which telecom service providers will lease to mount their wireless transmission equipment.
The smart poles are equipped with a variety of features that make them ideal for use in data networks. These features include:
- High-power amplifiers that can boost signal strength
- Multiple antennas that can provide better coverage
- Robust security features that can protect against vandalism and theft
The smart poles project is part of Kenya Power’s strategy to improve its grid infrastructure and provide better service to its customers. The project is also expected to help Kenya Power to diversify its revenue streams and reduce its reliance on electricity sales.
Benefits of Smart Poles
The smart poles project is expected to bring a number of benefits to Kenya Power and its customers. These benefits include:
- Improved data coverage and capacity
- Reduced signal dropouts
- Increased customer satisfaction
- Reduced costs for telecom service providers
- Increased revenue for Kenya Power
The smart poles project is a significant development for Kenya Power and the Kenyan telecommunications industry. The project has the potential to improve data coverage and capacity, reduce signal dropouts, and increase customer satisfaction. The project is also expected to help Kenya Power to diversify its revenue streams and reduce its reliance on electricity sales.
