How to Make Money on YouTube in Africa

YouTube has been time and again reiterating that Africans are not using the platform to its full advantage in Africa. According to the Head of YouTube Music Business and Partnership in Sub-Saharan Africa Addy Awofisayo, Kenya leads in the consumption of content, but creators are not using this to their advantage.

To help content creators learn how to best make YouTube a career, the Alphabet-owned company held its first-ever Festival at Nairobi Street Kitchen in Westlands Nairobi, aimed at highlighting what YouTube has to offer creators and its users whilst also educating them on how they can make more money using the platform.

According to the platform, there are at least 10 different ways to make money on YouTube.

Some of the ways include

  1. YouTube Partner Program – Creators can join the YouTube Partner Programme to monetize videos and unlock features. YouTube has a variety of programs designed to help Creators maximize their potential.
  2. Super stickers & Super chats – Super Chat and Super Stickers are ways to monetize your channel through the YouTube Partner Program. These features let your viewers purchase live chat messages that stand out and sometimes pin them to the top of a live chat feed.
  3. YouTube ShortsThe YouTube Shorts Fund is a new programme that is giving creators access to $100M across 2021 and 2022 to reward them for their contribution to YouTube’s community. If you’re a creator that is shooting and sharing Shorts, you’re eligible to participate and make money on your videos!

“Kenyan creators are engaging audiences not only in Kenya but all over the world. YouTube is driving global learning, innovation, and entertainment and is changing people’s lives for the better,” Director for Google EA Agnes Gathaiya said adding that YouTube is for everyone.

YouTube lead in East and West Africa Solafunmi Sosanya said that YouTube has diversified to a multi-player platform.

“As of December 2020, shorts has had over 5 trillion users. It is a very fast and easy way to showcase creativity, collaborate with other creators, and showcase talent,” she said.

In January 2022, YouTube also announced the #YouTubeBlack Voices class of 2022. A total of 133 content creators from across the world will participate in the 2022 edition.

This will include 26 content creators from Sub-Saharan Africa; Four from Kenya, 11 from Nigeria, and 11 from South Africa. The initiative is dedicated to equipping up-and-coming Black creators and artists with the resources to thrive on YouTube.
