How to Host Virtual Watch Parties on (Almost) Any Streaming Service

Gone are the days when movie nights meant everyone crammed on the same couch. Streaming services reign supreme, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy shows and movies with friends who live far away! Here’s your guide to hosting virtual watch parties on popular streaming services like Disney Plus and Amazon Prime Video (though Netflix is a notable exception!).

Before You Begin:

  • Shared Subscriptions: Both methods require everyone in the watch party to have subscriptions to the same streaming services (e.g., Netflix, Disney Plus). Sharing accounts is an option, but be sure everyone agrees and understands the terms of service.
  • Synchronized Viewing: Both methods rely on everyone using the same method and keeping their video playback in sync.

Method 1: Teleparty (formerly Netflix Party) – For Maximum Flexibility

Teleparty is a free browser extension that works like magic, allowing you to host watch parties on a variety of streaming services. Here’s what you need to do:

What You’ll Need:

  • A computer with Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Opera browser installed
  • The Teleparty extension (download from the official website or through your browser’s extension store)
  • A subscription to the streaming service you want to watch together (e.g., Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu)

Hosting the Party:

  1. Open Teleparty: Once installed, find the Teleparty icon (looks like a red “TP”) in your browser toolbar.
  2. Choose Your Show: Navigate to the streaming service of choice and pick the show or movie you want to watch.
  3. Start the Party: Click the Teleparty icon and select “Start the Party”.
  4. Share the Link: A new page opens with the video and a shareable link. Copy and send this link to your friends however you prefer (text, email, etc.).

Joining the Watch Party:

Your friends simply need to click the link you send. Here’s what they’ll do:

  1. Open the Link: The link will open in their browser.
  2. Activate Teleparty: Click the Teleparty icon in their browser toolbar.
  3. Join the Fun: They’ll be automatically connected to your watch party and can see the video playing in sync.

Bonus Feature: Teleparty boasts a group chat feature. Click the chat icon to share reactions, discuss plot twists, or virtually snack together!

Teleparty Pricing:

The free version works with Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, and more. For access to Apple TV Plus, Crunchyroll, ESPN Plus, and others, you can upgrade to the premium version for around $6.59 per month.

Method 2: SharePlay (Apple Users Only) – Seamless Viewing for Apple Fans

If everyone in your watch party has Apple devices (iPhones, iPads, or Macs), SharePlay lets you share your screen with them during a FaceTime call. Here’s how to get started:

What You’ll Need:

  • Apple devices with iOS 15.1 or later
  • FaceTime app
  • Subscriptions to the streaming service you want to watch together (e.g., Apple TV, Disney Plus)

Note: Some streaming services like YouTube require a premium membership to work with SharePlay, and Netflix is currently not supported.

Hosting the Party:

  1. Start a FaceTime Call: Initiate a FaceTime call with your watch party participants.
  2. Activate SharePlay: During the call, tap the “Share” icon in the top-right corner (looks like a person in front of a screen).
  3. Share Your Screen: Select “Share My Screen”.
  4. Choose the Streaming Service: Without ending the FaceTime call, go back to your home screen and open the desired streaming service (e.g., Apple TV, Disney Plus).
  5. Start the Show: Play the show or movie you want to watch together.

Enjoy the Show!

Now everyone in your FaceTime call can see your screen and watch the show in sync. Feel free to chat and react as you would during a normal movie night!

Beyond These Methods:

While Teleparty and SharePlay offer great options, some streaming services have built-in watch party features. Check the specific streaming service you want to use to see if they offer a native watch party option.

So grab your popcorn, pick your favorite show, and get ready to enjoy a virtual movie night with your friends, no matter the distance!
