As of today, publishers will no longer be able to set up new Google News publications through Publisher Center. This change marks the beginning of a transition toward automatically created publication pages, a feature set to roll out in early 2025.
Previously, publishers could manually create source pages within Publisher Center for users to follow. Those with existing manually created pages will retain access to customization tools until early 2025. After this point, all publication pages will be automatically generated, eliminating the need for manual setup.
Impact on Content Appearance in Google News
- Automatic Eligibility: Content from publishers that complies with Google’s content policies remains automatically eligible for inclusion in Google News and other news-related surfaces.
- No Guaranteed Visibility: Having a publication in Publisher Center does not guarantee content visibility. Eligibility and ranking depend on various factors, including:
- Relevance
- Prominence
- Authoritativeness
- Freshness
- Location and Language
For more details on ranking, publishers can consult Google News’ guidelines.
The transition to automated publication pages reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to streamline and standardize how news content is presented. Publishers should ensure their content adheres to Google’s policies and focus on quality and relevance to maximize their visibility across Google News and related surfaces.
