African Innovation Takes Center Stage at ASME ISHOW 2024 in Nairobi

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is gearing up for the 2024 ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW) in Nairobi, Kenya. This prestigious international accelerator program, focused on hardware-led social innovation, will see seven African startups compete for a chance to bring their impactful solutions to the market.

These finalists stand out for developing affordable and sustainable hardware technologies that address critical issues across various sectors: agriculture, construction, energy, healthcare, transportation, and waste management. They will vie for a share of a US$30,000 grant pool and receive valuable technical support to help turn their ideas into reality.

A Spotlight on Inspiring Solutions

  • Kenya: Adumu’s biodiesel-powered cooking system empowers institutions with a clean and efficient alternative, while Megagas tackles plastic waste by transforming it into clean cooking fuel.
  • Uganda: Che Innovations’ warming device safeguards newborns during ambulance transfers, and Neosave Technologies empowers healthcare professionals with a wearable device for continuous newborn monitoring.
  • Tanzania: Afya Lead’s non-invasive device combats postpartum hemorrhage, a major cause of maternal mortality.
  • Ghana: MeSADA’s innovative five-row precision seeder optimizes staple grain planting.
  • Zambia: Yaaka Investment’s non-emission portable waste bin tackles waste management challenges.

These finalists embody the spirit of African ingenuity, tackling pressing issues with practical and impactful hardware solutions. The ASME ISHOW 2024 promises to be a platform for showcasing innovation that empowers positive change across the continent.
