xAI Expands Grok Access with New iOS App and Upcoming Web Platform

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, is testing a standalone iOS app for its Grok chatbot, marking a significant expansion beyond its previous exclusivity to X (formerly Twitter) users. The app is now available in multiple countries, including the United States, Australia, and India.

Grok distinguishes itself with real-time access to web and X data, offering users a comprehensive suite of AI features. The chatbot’s capabilities include:

  • Text rewriting and summarization
  • Question answering
  • Image generation from text prompts
  • Image analysis through photo uploads

According to the app’s description, Grok is engineered to prioritize truthfulness, utility, and curiosity in its interactions with users. The AI assistant aims to provide a deeper understanding of users’ queries and their world.

In parallel with the iOS launch, xAI is developing Grok.com, a dedicated web platform for the chatbot. While currently displaying a “coming soon” message for xAI account holders, the website represents another step in making Grok more widely accessible.

A notable aspect of Grok’s offering is its image generation model, which xAI claims excels in photorealistic rendering. The company has taken a distinct approach by implementing fewer restrictions on image generation, allowing users to create images incorporating public figures and copyrighted material.

xAI’s Colossus training cluster, boasting 100,000 Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs, went live in September after a rapid 122-day build. xAI claims it’s the most powerful AI training system available. Last fall, Musk announced plans to expand Colossus to 200,000 GPUs by incorporating 50,000 Nvidia H200 GPUs.

This expansion follows xAI’s recent move to broaden Grok’s availability. Initially restricted to X’s premium subscribers, the company began testing a free version in November before making it available to all X users earlier this month. The standalone iOS app represents the latest step in making the AI assistant accessible to a broader audience.
