Vivo has launched the Vivo Y400 5G, a new smartphone poised to shake up the budget segment in Kenya by offering a range of features typically reserved for more expensive devices. The phone combines a vibrant, high-refresh-rate AMOLED display and a massive battery with an efficient Snapdragon processor, making it a compelling new option for consumers.

Following its debut in India, the Vivo Y400 is expected to arrive in the Kenyan market soon, challenging the norms of what a budget-friendly phone can deliver with its impressive durability and feature set.

The standout feature of the Vivo Y400 is its 6.67-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display. Unlike the LCD panels common at this price point, the AMOLED screen offers deeper blacks, more vibrant colors, and better contrast. It also boasts a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and an exceptionally high local peak brightness of 1800 nits, ensuring excellent visibility even under direct sunlight.

Under the hood, the Vivo Y400 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset. Built on an efficient 4nm process, this processor provides reliable day-to-day performance and, crucially, brings 5G connectivity to the budget category. This is paired with 8GB of RAM, which can be expanded with an additional 8GB of virtual RAM for smoother multitasking.

The phone’s biggest highlight is its enormous 6,000mAh battery, which is significantly larger than what most competitors offer. This is coupled with blazing-fast 90W wired charging, which Vivo claims can charge the device to 50% in about 20 minutes. For gamers, the phone also includes a Bypass Charging feature that powers the phone directly, reducing heat and preserving battery health during long sessions.

In the camera department, the Vivo Y400 features a dual rear camera setup led by a 50-megapixel Sony IMX852 primary sensor, accompanied by a 2-megapixel depth sensor. For selfies, it is equipped with a high-resolution 32-megapixel front-facing camera. The phone even includes a unique underwater photography mode, leveraging its robust water resistance.

Speaking of durability, the Y400 comes with IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, a feature almost unheard of in this price segment, offering flagship-level protection against the elements.

The device runs on Funtouch OS 15, based on the latest Android 15. It also incorporates several of the latest AI-powered tools, including AI Transcript Assist, AI Note Assist, and the popular Circle to Search feature, bringing smart, flagship-level functionality to a more accessible price point.

The Vivo Y400 5G launched in India with a starting price of ₹21,999 (approximately KES 34,500). While official local pricing has not yet been announced, Kenyan consumers can expect it to be competitively priced when it arrives through official Vivo channels and local retailers in the coming weeks.
