In recent times, Kenya’s President William Ruto has frequently used the phrase “leveraging the use of AI to…” when discussing various national initiatives. While this tech-savvy language might sound impressive, it’s worth examining whether it represents genuine technological advancement or merely buzzword-laden rhetoric.
President Ruto’s repeated use of tech-related terminology, particularly in a clip that went viral on social media, has caught the attention of many Kenyans. In the video, he uses the phrase “leveraging the use of AI to” multiple times in quick succession, applying it to diverse areas such as agriculture, healthcare, and education.
This is not the first time President William Ruto has launched something to do with AI, earlier this year, he announced the Green Digital Innovation Hub, a center that was supposed to foster green and digital transitions in agriculture, ICT, and energy sectors. According to the President, the hub is powered by artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and cloud computing and is aimed at supporting the micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises sector, the lifeblood of Kenya’s economy.
Earlier this week, he also announced measures to prevent artificial intelligence (AI) from spreading disinformation, alongside the launch of the Fifth National Action Plan on Open Government Partnership.
He flaunts the AI buzzword a lot, but what does this really mean for Kenya’s technological future?
Questions We Should Be Asking
- Is there substance behind the style? Are there concrete plans and infrastructures in place to support these AI initiatives, or is this merely fashionable tech-speak?
- What specific AI technologies are being referenced? When the President talks about “leveraging AI,” what exact technologies or applications is he referring to?
- How will these AI initiatives impact ordinary Kenyans? Beyond the buzzwords, how will AI implementation affect day-to-day life for Kenyan citizens?
- Is there a risk of over-promising and under-delivering? By frequently invoking AI, is there a danger of creating unrealistic expectations among the public?
- What about the ethical implications? Has the government considered the potential ethical challenges and societal impacts of widespread AI adoption?
- Are we prioritizing AI at the expense of other crucial developments? Is the focus on AI diverting attention and resources from other pressing needs in Kenya’s tech ecosystem?
- How does Kenya’s AI strategy compare to other African nations? Are we truly at the forefront of AI adoption in Africa, or are we playing catch-up?
While it’s encouraging to see Kenya’s leadership embracing technological advancement, it’s crucial for citizens and media to critically analyze such statements. The repetitive use of AI-related phrases without clear context or explanation risks turning important policy discussions into mere soundbites.
For Kenya to truly leverage AI for national development, we need:
- Clear, detailed policies outlining AI implementation strategies
- Substantial investments in technological infrastructure and education
- Transparent discussions about the potential benefits and risks of AI adoption
- Collaboration with tech experts, ethicists, and civil society to ensure responsible AI use
President Ruto’s enthusiasm for AI could be a positive sign for Kenya’s technological future. However, to move from rhetoric to reality, we need more than just buzzwords. We need concrete plans, clear explanations, and tangible results.
As engaged citizens, it’s our responsibility to push for substance behind the style, ensuring that Kenya’s AI journey is one of genuine progress, not just impressive-sounding speeches.
What do you think? Is Kenya truly on the brink of an AI revolution, or do we need to see more concrete evidence before celebrating our tech-forward future?
