Super Metro Gets First Electric Bus, What This Means For Kenyan Public Transport

Super Metro Sacco, one of Nairobi’s leading public transport operators, renowned for good customer service has announced the introduction of a 25-seater electric bus to its fleet in Nairobi County.

This latest addition comes in partnership with BasiGo, a provider of sustainable transport solutions, and is part of Super Metro’s commitment to becoming a leading and efficient public transport provider in the country.

BasiGo recently unveiled 15 electric buses in Nairobi, just a few months after partnering with KCB Bank Kenya to provide access to flexible financing options for Kenyan Public Service Vehicles.

The K6 electric bus, supplied by BasiGo, began operating on Tuesday and will ply the CBD to Kikuyu and CBD to Kitengela routes. The bus has a range of 250 km on a full charge and can be recharged in less than 4 hours. The K6 is a premium passenger coach with synthetic leather seats, free WiFi, USB charging ports, and an onboard television screen.

“We are proud to hand over this transformative bus to Super Metro. Through this partnership, BasiGo and Super Metro are bringing Nairobi commuters a cleaner, quieter, and more comfortable journey on buses powered by 90% renewable energy generated right here in Kenya,” said Jit Bhattacharya, CEO BasiGo.

Super Metro Sacco’s chairperson, Nelson Mwangi Nduki, expressed his excitement about the addition of the electric bus to their fleet, stating that it will offer their customers a top-notch ride experience. “We look forward to hearing positive feedback from our drivers and passengers,” he added.

The introduction of the K6 electric bus to Super Metro’s fleet is a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation. As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, it is becoming increasingly important for businesses to adopt sustainable practices. Super Metro’s move towards electric vehicles is a commendable initiative that other public transport providers in the country should emulate.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, the K6 electric bus is also cost-effective in the long run. With the rising cost of fuel and the need to reduce operating costs, electric buses are a viable option for public transport providers. The K6 is expected to save Super Metro Sacco up to 40% in operational costs compared to a conventional diesel-powered bus.

The introduction of the K6 electric bus to Super Metro’s fleet is a step in the right direction towards achieving sustainable transportation in Nairobi County. As more public transport providers in the country adopt electric vehicles, we can expect a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable transport system.
