Starlink is Now Officially Available in these 8 African Countries

Sierra Leone is now the 8th African country and 100th nation globally to get SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service.

This launch marks a significant step forward for Sierra Leone’s digital infrastructure. With internet penetration rates hovering around 21%, Starlink has the potential to revolutionize access for the country’s citizens. Projections estimate a surge to 40.41% by the end of 2024, opening doors to a more connected future.

Sierra Leone’s embrace of Starlink reflects a broader trend across Africa. Several countries, including Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, have recently granted the service operational licenses after initial hesitation or restrictions.

Nigeria: Starlink launched in Nigeria in early 2023 and has been steadily growing its customer base. It is seen as a viable option for those in areas with limited or unreliable internet connectivity.

Rwanda: Starlink was introduced in Rwanda in March 2023 with a pilot program targeting 500 schools. Since then, it has expanded to offer commercial services and has seen significant growth.

Mozambique: Starlink became available in Mozambique in 2023, providing an alternative to traditional internet providers in a country with often limited connectivity options.

Kenya: Starlink launched in Kenya in mid-2023, offering high-speed, low-latency internet to both individuals and businesses.

Malawi: Starlink’s presence in Malawi is aimed at bridging the digital divide in a country where internet access is often limited.

Zambia: Starlink launched in Zambia in 2023, focusing on providing internet access to underserved areas.

Benin: Starlink launched in Benin in November 2023, making it the 6th African country to have access to this satellite internet service then.

These developments highlight a growing recognition of the potential benefits Starlink offers. Improved internet connectivity is vital for economic growth, education, healthcare, and countless other sectors across Africa.

David Moinina Sengeh, Sierra Leone’s Chief Innovation Officer and former education minister, played a key role in bringing Starlink to the country. His engagement with SpaceX representatives in May 2024 paved the way for the service’s launch just a month later. Sengeh’s story reflects a dedication to bridging the digital divide and harnessing technology for transformative change.

With its growing presence in Africa, Starlink is poised to play a significant role in bridging the digital divide. Increased internet access holds immense potential to empower individuals, businesses, and communities across the continent.
