Samsung Galaxy A15 5G: A Budget Warrior with Staying Power?

The Samsung Galaxy A15 5G is part of the Galaxy A series launched amidst the noise of the Galaxy S24 series and positioned as a very affordable entry-level phone. While it’s not the flagship S24 Ultra, it still packs some impressive features. But in a crowded market, can it stand out? We spent a few days with this affordable option to see if it packs enough punch.

Design & Build

The A15 boasts a sleek, modern design with a textured plastic frame and back and a waterdrop notch display. While not premium feeling, being just 200g, it’s comfortable to hold and lightweight. It comes in three vibrant colors: black, white, and green. Despite being plastic the design is glossy making it a fingerprint magnet so we recommend getting a case for it.

Display

One of the highlights of the A15 is its stunning 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display. This technology delivers great viewing angles, vibrant colors, deep blacks, and exceptional clarity thanks to its Full HD resolution. For media consumption, the A15 delivers. However, if you don’t like large bezels, this device is not for you. Outdoor visibility also suffers under direct sunlight. Another thing we noted is despite the device also boasting a 90Hz display it barely feels like it when you use it.

Performance & Storage

We struggled to feel the smoothness of the 90Hz display on the A15 because of the performance. The 6nm MediaTek chipset which is paired with 4GB of RAM on our unit was very laggy even when doing basic tasks like browsing, social media, and light gaming. It stutters a lot and takes too long to open apps.

We would recommend picking up the 8GB RAM variant to ensure decent performance for everyday tasks.

Memory options range from 4GB to 8GB of RAM, coupled with 128GB or 256GB of storage, ensuring you have enough space for your essentials. Additionally, the expandable storage via microSDXC allows for further customization.

Camera

The A15’s quad-camera system surpasses expectations for an entry-level phone. The 50MP main sensor captures detailed photos in good lighting, while the ultra-wide sensor helps capture broader landscapes. The macro lens caters to capturing close-up details, and the front-facing 13MP selfie camera is perfect for video calls and casual snaps.

Despite the shutter lag due to the performance, the device captures very nice pictures, here are some stills we managed to capture over our few days with the budget offering in both good and bad lighting conditions and judge for yourself.

Battery and Charging

Yet another place this phone shines, the 5,000mAh battery is a powerhouse, easily lasting more than two days on a single charge with moderate usage. Even heavy users will appreciate a full day. Additionally, the 25W fast charging support eliminates the worry of waiting hours for a full charge. Samsung’s commitment to abandoning 15W chargers further demonstrates their focus on faster charging experiences.

Software and UI

The A15 5G runs the latest Android 14 with One UI 6, out of the box giving it almost the same feel as its far more expensive brothers and sisters. If you love Samsung’s user-friendly interface you will love the A15. While it lacks some advanced features like DeX support and Always-On Display, it provides a stable and enjoyable experience without unnecessary bloatware. Additionally, Samsung promises four years of system updates, ensuring users stay secure and benefit from the latest features.

Connectivity and Extras

The A15 offers standard connectivity options like 5G LTE, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC, supporting essential wireless connections. The inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack and FM radio caters to the preferences of users who still enjoy these features. Side-mounted fingerprint reader and virtual proximity sensing provide convenient security and functionality.

Conclusion

You can get the Samsung Galaxy A15 from around Ksh25,000 – Ksh35,000.

The Samsung Galaxy A15 offers excellent value for its price point. With a beautiful display, a capable camera system, and a long-lasting battery, it caters well to users seeking a reliable and feature-packed entry-level smartphone. While it may not be the ultimate powerhouse, it delivers a well-rounded experience that surpasses expectations for its category. For users prioritizing display quality, camera performance, and battery life within a budget, the A15 is worth considering.
