Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) is today celebrating its silver jubilee, marking 25 years of operations since its official launch on October 23, 2000.

In a statement, the company reaffirmed its commitment to powering digital transformation and sustainable growth across the region.

Since its inception, Safaricom has evolved from a pioneering mobile service provider into a purpose-led technology company. It has been a cornerstone of Kenya’s digital economy, transforming lives through connectivity, innovative mobile money solutions like M-PESA, and impactful social investments.

“Today, we are not only celebrating 25 years of existence, but we are also celebrating 25 years of connecting and transforming the lives of millions of Kenyans and across the region,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom PLC.

“From the first mobile call made on our network in 2000 to becoming a key driver of Kenya’s digital economy, our story has been one of innovation, inclusion, and impact. As we look to the future, we remain committed to driving digital transformation, supporting enterprise, and empowering communities to thrive in a connected world.”

A Quarter-Century of Key Milestones

Over the past 25 years, Safaricom’s growth has been defined by innovation and the trust of Kenyans. The company recently achieved a historic milestone, surpassing 50 million customers on its mobile network in Kenya.

The M-PESA Revolution

A key pillar of its success is M-PESA, which has redefined financial services in the region. The mobile money platform now serves over 35 million active customers, driving economic growth, financial inclusion, and entrepreneurship.

Powering a Digital Future with 5G

Safaricom has invested heavily in expanding its network infrastructure, ensuring reliable connectivity for all Kenyans. With the strategic rollout of 5G technology, the company has positioned Kenya as a regional leader in digital innovation. This enables faster internet speeds, supports emerging technologies, and improves service delivery, including convenient access to government services from any location.

Regional Expansion: Safaricom Ethiopia

The company’s ambition has also expanded beyond Kenya’s borders. Safaricom launched operations in Ethiopia in 2022, extending innovations like M-PESA to contribute to Ethiopia’s digital and financial inclusion agenda.

The expansion has shown rapid success, with Safaricom Ethiopia growing to over 10 million customers by August 2025, marking a major step in the company’s regional growth strategy.

In line with its purpose of “Transforming Lives,” Safaricom continues to invest in communities through its Foundations, supporting programs in health, education, and environmental conservation.
