The Kenyan government has launched a new Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal to improve the financing of higher education in the country. The portal allows students to apply for scholarships, loans, and bursaries.
The HEF portal is a one-stop shop for all higher education financing needs. Students can use the portal to find scholarships that match their interests and qualifications, apply for loans, and learn about bursaries that are available. The portal also provides information on the eligibility criteria for each type of financing, as well as the application process.
The launch of the HEF portal is a major step forward in the government’s efforts to make higher education more accessible to Kenyans. The portal is expected to simplify the application process for scholarships, loans, and bursaries, and to make it easier for students to find the financing they need to pursue their studies.
How to Use the HEF Portal
To use the HEF portal, sign up here or sign in here if you have an account.
To apply for a scholarship, students must first select the scholarship they are interested in. They will then need to provide information about their academic qualifications, their financial need, and their extracurricular activities. Students can also upload supporting documents, such as transcripts and letters of recommendation.

To apply for a bursary, students must first select the bursary they are interested in. They will then need to provide information about their financial need and their academic qualifications. Students can also upload supporting documents, such as letters from their school principal or teacher.
Benefits of Using the HEF Portal
Under the model, those students falling under the vulnerable and extremely needy band will qualify for 100% government funding for their studies with the money coming as scholarships and loans, and those deemed to be needy and less needy will get 93% government funding, with the students bearing 7% of the tuition costs.
The HEF portal offers a number of benefits to students, including:
- Convenience: The portal provides a convenient way for students to apply for scholarships, loans, and bursaries. Students can apply from anywhere in the country, and they can do so at any time.
- Efficiency: The portal streamlines the application process, making it easier for students to find the financing they need.
- Transparency: The portal provides clear information about the eligibility criteria and the application process for each type of financing. This helps students to understand their options and to make informed decisions about their financing.
