Google’s Generative AI Comes to Search in Africa

Google has recently unveiled its Search Generative Experience (SGE) in Sub-Saharan Africa, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of search technology. This innovative feature, powered by generative AI, is set to transform the way users explore and interact with information online.

SGE is designed to empower users to ask open-ended questions and receive comprehensive, informative responses. This represents a shift from traditional search methods, where users had to break down their queries into smaller, more specific questions. With SGE, Google’s generative AI does the heavy lifting, providing an AI-powered overview of key information and suggesting the next steps for users to dig deeper.

For instance, consider a query like “most common interview questions”. Previously, users would have to sift through vast amounts of information and piece together answers themselves. Now, with generative AI, Search can provide an overview and suggest follow-up questions like “How do I answer, what are your weaknesses”. This new conversational mode allows users to explore topics more naturally and intuitively.

Google is committed to a responsible and deliberate approach in integrating generative AI into Search. The models behind SGE have been trained to uphold Search’s high bar for quality, and improvements will continue to be made over time. Despite the known limitations of generative AI and Language Model Large (LLMs), Google is dedicated to ensuring that the new capabilities enhance the search experience while maintaining quality and reliability.

SGE is designed to highlight and drive attention to web content, making it easier for users to dive deeper into the topics they’re learning about. More links and a wider range of sources are displayed on the results page, creating new opportunities for content discovery. Ads, a vital part of the web ecosystem, will continue to appear in dedicated slots throughout the page. Google remains committed to ad transparency, ensuring ads are distinguishable from organic search results.
