In a decisive commitment to Africa’s rapidly growing AI ecosystem, Google has pledged $37 million to support artificial intelligence development across the continent. At the heart of the initiative is the launch of a new AI Community Center in Accra, which is envisioned as a collaborative hub for researchers, developers, and civil society to explore how AI can be used to solve some of Africa’s most pressing challenges, from food insecurity to healthcare access.

A Breakdown of the $37 Million Commitment

The funding is allocated across several key strategic areas:

• $25 Million for Food Security: A flagship commitment from Google.org will establish the AI Collaborative: Food Security. This fund will empower African researchers and non-profits to use AI for hunger forecasting, developing climate-resilient crops, and providing real-time insights to farmers.
• $3 Million for African Languages: The Masakhane African Languages AI Hub will receive funding to develop translation tools and datasets for over 40 African languages, a crucial step in preserving the continent’s rich linguistic diversity in the digital age.
• $2 Million for Academic Research: Google will award $1 million each to the African Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AfriDSAI) at the University of Pretoria and the Wits MIND Institute. • $7 Million for Skills Development: This allocation will scale up AI literacy and online safety training programs in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa through partnerships with academic institutions and non-profits.
