Flutterwave Discontinues Barter Virtual Card Service in Strategic Pivot

Flutterwave, a leading African fintech company, has announced the discontinuation of its Barter virtual card service. This decision comes as the company refocuses its efforts on its core enterprise and remittance business segments.

Launched in 2017, Barter provided users with the ability to create virtual dollar cards for online transactions, offering Nigerians a valuable tool for international payments. However, the service faced challenges, including downtime periods in 2022 and customer complaints about card rejections by merchants.

Flutterwave’s pivot emphasizes its commitment to scaling its enterprise and remittance solutions, which have proven to be major revenue drivers for the company. The decision to sunset Barter reflects a focus on optimizing its most successful offerings.

Barter users have been advised to withdraw their remaining funds from the platform. While Flutterwave acknowledges the importance of the retail market, its current priorities lie in strengthening its position as a leader in B2B payments and remittance solutions.
