Ride-hailing platform Bolt today hosted a comprehensive safety training workshop for its drivers and couriers, in a collaborative effort with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the National Police Service (NPS) Traffic Department, and the Nairobi City County Government (NCCG). The initiative aimed to enhance road safety standards and foster stronger cooperation between the platform and key transport sector stakeholders.
The workshop provided expert-led training sessions on a range of critical topics, including Kenyan traffic laws, behavioral change on the road, personal security protocols, and essential first aid procedures. The event underscored a growing emphasis on public-private partnerships to improve safety and professionalism within Kenya’s rapidly evolving urban mobility landscape.
Speaking at the event, Dimmy Kanyankole, General Manager for Rides in Kenya at Bolt, reiterated the company’s commitment to safety. “At Bolt, safety remains our topmost priority and we continuously invest in cutting-edge technology and innovations to safeguard our users’ well-being,” he said. “We are also dedicated to forging partnerships with key government and industry players… This collaborative strategy ensures that safety remains paramount.”
The training is expected to lead to better adherence to traffic regulations and increased adoption of safety features, such as helmet use and in-app emergency response tools.
Ibrahim Nyangoya, Nairobi County’s CEC Member for Mobility and Works, praised the initiative, highlighting its importance as app-based transport becomes integral to city life. “This summit comes at a pivotal moment in Nairobi’s transport journey. As app-based mobility becomes part of daily life, our approach to safety and professionalism must evolve just as quickly,” he stated. “Public-private partnerships are no longer a luxury but a necessity, and it’s encouraging to see Bolt taking the lead.”
The workshop also received strong endorsement from law enforcement and national transport regulators. Dr. Frederick Ochieng, Traffic Commandant for the Nairobi Police Service, emphasized the shared responsibility in preventing accidents. “Safe driving saves lives, it’s that simple, and that urgent. This workshop deepens our collaboration with partners like Bolt, helping raise safety standards for both drivers and riders,” he said.
This sentiment was echoed by Mr. Samuel Musumba, Manager of Road Safety Programs at NTSA, who linked the initiative to broader national goals. “As a country, we’re at a turning point, and that is why the launch of the National Road Safety Action Plan is so significant. We aim to reduce road deaths by 50% by year-end, and this demands real collaboration,” Musumba noted. “We commend Bolt for stepping up to co-host this important summit.”
In addition to the training, Bolt also took the opportunity to recognize and award its top-performing couriers on the Bolt Food platform for their commitment to service excellence and professionalism. The event reinforces a proactive approach to safety within the gig economy, aiming to create a more reliable and secure operating environment for all stakeholders.
