Apple Unveils New iPad Pro Lineup Boasting M4 Chip and OLED Display pen_spark

Apple yesterday officially unveiled its latest iteration of the iPad Pro, featuring significant upgrades in design and hardware.

M4 Chip and Tandem OLED Take Center Stage

The new iPad Pro comes in 11-inch and 13-inch models, equipped with the M4 chip – the successor to the M2 chip – promising a 50% improvement in CPU performance. Both models also boast a new “Tandem OLED” display technology, which Apple claims delivers superior brightness, color accuracy, and lifespan compared to previous models. The display, called “Ultra Retina XDR,” offers a maximum full-screen brightness of 1,000 nits and peak HDR brightness of 1,600 nits.

Thinner Design and Improved Thermals

Thanks to the OLED technology, Apple achieved a slimmer design for both iPad Pro models. The 11-inch model measures 5.3mm thin, while the 13-inch model comes in at an impressive 5.1mm, making it Apple’s thinnest product yet. Despite the reduced thickness, Apple claims the new iPad Pro offers better thermal performance due to the use of graphite sheets and copper in the construction.

Connectivity and Storage Options

The M4 iPad Pro models come equipped with a single USB-C port supporting Thunderbolt 3 or USB 4 standard, offering a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s. Wi-Fi 6E and 5G connectivity options are also available. Storage options range from 256GB to 2TB, with cellular models requiring an additional $200.

Camera System and Accessories

The rear camera setup remains largely unchanged, featuring a 12MP wide sensor and a LiDAR scanner, though the ultrawide-angle lens is absent. The front-facing camera receives an upgrade to a 12MP TrueDepth camera with a 122-degree field of view.

For users seeking a laptop-like experience, Apple offers the Apple Pencil Pro and a revamped Magic Keyboard (sold separately) alongside the iPad Pro.

Pricing and Availability

Contrary to earlier rumors, Apple maintained the starting price point from the previous generation, with the 11-inch model starting at $999 and the 13-inch model starting at $1,299. Pre-orders begin today, May 7th, with shipments commencing on May 15th.
